Perodua Ativa Buying Guide — Turbo, D-CVT & ADAS Checks
· Roda Editorial · Updated
The Perodua Ativa is a compact SUV with a small turbocharged engine, a D-CVT automatic and, on higher variants, driver assistance features. It has been on sale since 2021, so used examples are still fairly young. This guide covers what the Ativa offers according to Perodua, what is different about owning a small turbo engine, and what to check before you buy a used one.
The Ativa at a glance
Based on Perodua's model page and paultan.org's model history, as of October 2026:
- Launched: March 2021 (model code D55L). There has been one generation so far.
- Engine: 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo (1KR-VE turbo, 998 cc), rated at 72 kW and 140 Nm.
- Gearbox: Perodua's D-CVT automatic on all variants.
- Variants: several trim levels, with more equipment and driver assistance features on the higher ones. Check Perodua's page for what each variant includes.
In May 2026, paultan.org reported that Perodua had confirmed local production of an Ativa hybrid. At the time of writing, Perodua's model page did not list a hybrid. Check Perodua's site if you are deciding between a used Ativa and a new one.
Owning a small turbo engine
A turbo lets a small engine produce more pulling power, especially at low and middle engine speeds. It also asks more of the oil, because the turbo runs hot and spins fast.
- Follow the service schedule in the warranty and service booklet, using the oil specification Perodua lists.
- After a long, hard drive, let the engine idle briefly before switching off, if your owner's manual recommends it.
- Listen for unusual whistling or whining from the engine bay, and watch for blue smoke on acceleration.
Driver assistance features
Higher Ativa variants come with Perodua's driver assistance features, which can include functions such as automatic emergency braking and lane-related warnings. On a used car:
- Check that no driver assistance warning lights stay on after start-up.
- Look at the windscreen around the camera and the front bumper around any sensors. A cracked windscreen or a badly repaired bumper can affect these systems.
- Ask whether the windscreen has been replaced, and where. Some systems need recalibration after a replacement.
- Read the owner's manual for how each feature works. Driver assistance does not replace attention.
Warranty
According to Perodua's FAQ, as of October 2026:
- Basic warranty: 3 years or 100,000 km, whichever comes first.
- Major parts: 5 years or 150,000 km, whichever comes first.
- Servicing at a non-authorised centre voids the warranty, late service could void it, and modifications void it.
An Ativa registered in the last five years may still be within the major parts warranty, depending on its mileage. Perodua's FAQ does not say whether the warranty transfers to the next owner, so ask a Perodua authorised service centre in writing, and ask for the service history.
What to check on a used Ativa
- Paperwork: the name on the registration record matches the seller's IC, and the chassis and engine numbers match.
- Loan: if the car is still under hire purchase, agree how the loan will be settled at transfer. See how to sell a car with an outstanding loan.
- Service history: regular services at the intervals in the booklet, ideally at an authorised centre while under warranty.
- D-CVT: pull away gently and firmly. It should be smooth, without judder or delay.
- Turbo: accelerate from low speed in a safe place. Power should come in smoothly without warning lights.
- Body and underside: check bumpers and sills for scrapes from kerbs and rough roads.
- Interior: test the air-conditioning, infotainment, camera and all electrics.
- Flood signs: silt or water marks under carpets and in the boot.
Then book an inspection and complete the transfer. See our PUSPAKOM inspection guide and JPJ ownership transfer guide.
Road tax and running costs
The Ativa's engine is under 1,000 cc, which is the lowest road tax band for petrol cars in JPJ's rate guide. Insurance depends on the car's value and your no claim discount. Budget for tyres, a battery and brake service if they are due.
Certified option
Perodua's certified pre-owned programme lists a 165-checkpoint inspection and up to 18 months of extended warranty. See certified pre-owned cars.
Alternatives to compare
If you are shopping for a compact SUV, compare the Proton X50 and the Honda HR-V. For a hatchback with similar running costs, see the Perodua Myvi guide.
